Queering Medicine

Queering Medicine is a grass roots advocacy organization based in the greater Lansing area focused on improving the health outcomes of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. They build coalitions and partnerships, generate new knowledge, disseminate information, and help address barriers to healthcare access.

This was an important commission for me as a Queer person and having many family members in healthcare. The organization was heavily involved in the creation process, there was plenty of feedback and ideas to draw inspiration from.

One challenge I had to overcome was moving away from symbols that went against harm reduction principles. Harm reduction principles are sets of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. I created a lot of designs without knowledge of this concept so it was great to have this experience for future design projects.

This logo commission was for my dear friend from undergrad who is an indigenous beadwork artist based in Maine. The sandhill crane is an important symbol for leadership so it is the focal point of the logo while the circles around the area represent beadwork.

This logo was part of a rebrand project for Marilyn DeMartini who was a client under Barrow & Co. Creative. I went for a minimal look and I thought that a wave was a great representation for her marine content and the orange, “Tells Your Story” to emphasize her journalism work.
